Do you remember the jokes about Bertha proving that Seattle isn’t boring? Bertha, the massive machine brought in to bore a tunnel for the Washington State Route 99 project, had a massive breakdown in the midst of the job. At the time, the venture was already controversial. Some folks were all in favor of repairing Seattle’s aging viaduct while others advocated tearing it down in order to totally reimagine the waterfront. Ultimately, the viaduct was removed in 2019 and Seattle’s new Waterfront Park officially opened September 2025.
This new development has a lot to explore:
Best of all, while in the area visitors can pause to relax in several Seattle Urban Wineries. Here’s where to find them.
BacoVino offers the newest tasting room – their second location – in the former Travelers Hotel building. It’s conveniently located near the Seattle Ferry Terminal should you be interested in enjoying a glass of Bordeaux inspired wine while waiting to take a scenic ferry ride. If the location at 80 Yesler Way seems familiar, it may be because it formerly housed beloved Italian restaurant Trattoria Mitchelli. Even better, it’s central to numerous attractions.
Six blocks north is the ever-popular Pike Place Market. Head to Post Alley, and across from the enchanting Pink Door restaurant is the Wines of Washington Tasting Room, featuring the illustrious beverages of eight artisans including Paul Beveridge’s Wilridge, Seattle’s first winery and long-time member of Seattle Urban Wineries. Wilridge has also been recognized with the top award from Slow Wine USA for organic and biodynamic wines.
A few blocks southeast of the BacoVino tasting room is Occidental Square, the heart of Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square, well known for its First Thursday Art Walks. It is here that Locus Wines offers an enticing array of nosh and nibbles to accompany their tantalizing wine selections. When was the last time you had a glass of Counoise?
The Browne Family Vineyards Tasting Room is another few blocks south. Wine by the glass or bottle is on offer in addition to ample tasting flights featuring fun diverse selections from bubbles to aged wines and big reds.
The proximity of these venues to Qwest Field and T-Mobile Park make them ideal locales to pre-function prior to Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Mariners or Seattle Sounders games.
